Outerwear with Teo van den Broeke.

With Autumn fast approaching the Tiger of Sweden team flew to London to catch up with friend of the brand Teo van den Broeke, Style Director of Esquire Magazine. Teo is one of those men who actually impacts what you wear without you really knowing it. Teo has been working at the British menswear magazine Esquire for more than seven years, not only being the Style Director at Esquire Magazine but also the Deputy Editor at Esquire Big Black Book and Esquire Big Watch Book. He’s a tastemaker and the one we would all like to have by our side when we shop this season’s outerwear.

What do you think is important when you’re buying autumn outerwear?
Autumn outerwear is all about thinking in terms of layers instead of one big insulating piece. Your autumn jacket should be easy to team with a thick layer when it’s cold and light enough to wear on its own when its warm. Natural fibers are essential, and nothing too insulating – no cashmeres, for instance.

Should you invest in one expensive garment or several cheaper in different models?
I would always recommend investing in one beautifully made garment which will stand the test of time, that said, for a transitional item you could do worse than invest in a couple of key pieces – a canvas field jacket and a quilted piece for instance, which will do the job for the short time you’ll need them.

If you only could afford one piece of autumn outerwear, which type of garment should you recommend and why?
If you’re only buying one piece, I would recommend buying a dark suede shirt jacket which will look expensive on its own, is great layered up (suede is a lovely texture against knitwear) and will be light enough if the weather suddenly starts to warm up a bit.

Since we’re in London, have you spotted any new outerwear trends here?
A trend in London right now is for layering shirts with shirt jackets and field jackets, lots of multi layers which work as a cohesive whole.

Your own absolute favourite piece?
My favourite piece at the moment is actually one of your garments. The beautiful shearling bomber jacket ‘Gumse’.

Last one, fashion or function?
A mix of fashion and function for me, the two needn’t be mutually exclusive.
