Anna-Sara Dåvik is a fashion designer with purpose and reflection. Nothing is left to chance and understanding why and how we dress is the foundation of her design. Style and vision is a conversation, and by looking inwards, into yourself, she wants to encourage everyone to find that voice.

What is fashion to you?

Fashion is a way to express yourself. For me it also goes hand in hand with the craft. Proportions and shapes. Like, the basics of fashion.

Is it people who inspire you, or perhaps more ideas?

Now it’s more ideas. Now I work more with how to bring fashion forward. They way we’re living today, how it can be relevant. Why continue creating more things? What’s important? It’s very relevant for me to see the whole picture of what I’m a part of, and to try to be something good in this whole thing I’m contributing to. Fashion is supposed to be joyful and it’s always been my biggest source of inspiration, to create beautiful things and take responsibility for what I’m putting out in this world. I want to make a difference in people’s lives. To make them reflect on something, have a connection to what they use and wear. To live with it. So fashion for me is a necessity and a struggle. But it is my life and my love.

In what way would you say it’s a struggle?

To find a way of doing it and contributing in a good way. You know we all need good things to be able to live in the world today. And I think we need to pull things closer to us and not distance ourselves, so things become products. I want to keep things close, I want the process to be close. Fashion is pieces of garments and jewellry. It is made by hand. Something you feel. It should speak to you. You should want to keep it and take care of it. I want people to connect to what I do. And if they don’t want it anymore, it can be adapted to someone else. How I work is more flexible to different types of bodies so it can be passed on to others.

You think you will work the same way in 5 years?

In a way I think I’ve been doing the same thing forever. I don’t see very far ahead, it’s one year at a time. It’s hard to know if everyone’s ready. It’s a struggle to be in the forefront. When you’re in this position, you’re supposed to produce a lot of things to be interesting, and it’s hard to take it down and to slow it down.

Would that be your advice to young people who want to work with fashion, to slow it down?

My advice would be to follow your heart and follow your passion because that’s the only way you can stay in it for the long run. That’s what it takes to follow your dreams. If you’re going to put in the work, your heart has to be in it.

Is this passion what keeps you going even though you mentioned a struggle with your work?

It’s almost like a calling. It’s the thing I know best and how I channel things when lust comes. This is how I channel my creativity. But you don’t have the creativity all the time, so it’s also about the stubbornness and just keeping to the schedule and the plan.
